Draped Reclining Figure 1978 LH 706 travertine marble length 182cm

Sculptures on loan from The Henry Moore Foundation show how Moore related the human form to landscape, rock formations, flints, bones and pebbles. These, together with a selection of found objects from Moore 's studio, will be exhibited in Lewes Town Hall . Large travertine marble carvings, maquettes and working models in both plaster and bronze, have been selected to show both major and lesser known works, a number of which have not been seen before in Britain.

In the 14th century an inn owned by the monks of Southover Priory stood on the site of Lewes Town Hall . By time of the dissolution of the monasteries under the rule of Henry VIII it had become the Star Inn, which in the 1660s was noted for its fine wine and cuisine. By the 18th century monthly suppers and balls for the local gentry were held there.

When Lewes was granted its charter in 1881, the search began for a place to hold council meetings. The Star Inn was bought by the council in 1890 for between £4,000 and £5,000. By 1893 it had been converted into the Town Hall. A significant feature of the building is the steps where in 1557 seventeen Protestant martyrs are said to have climbed to their fate, to be burned at the stake. Of particular note is the magnificent Renaissance staircase brought from Slaugham Place:
"... from 1732, a Tory landowner, Thomas Sergison of Cuckfield, challenged the Whig Duke of Newcastle 's political control of Lewes Borough. He made the Star Inn and the coffee house (opposite) his campaign headquarters, and from a dismantled mansion he owned – Slaugham Place – he brought the Renaissance staircase, dating from about 1600, and equal in splendour to those at Blickling and Hatfield. Continents, Virtues, and Greek gods adorn the high newel-posts. He also gave the inn a smart brick Georgian façade, and a well-proportioned assembly-room (the present Council Chamber).”
